Artist Don Maitz has achieved international acclaim for his award winning fantasy and science fiction paintings. A Connecticut native, Maitz has been actively engaged in artistic pursuits since childhood. He attended the University of Hartford's evening figure drawing class while still in high school. He later graduated top in his class from the Paier School of Art in Hamden, Connecticut.

Maitz's artwork has won top honors in the realm of fantasy and science fiction art. In 1990, he won the Hugo Award for Best Artist along with a special Best Original Artwork Award; he won the Hugo Award for Best Artist again in 1993. His first art book, First Maitz, was also nominated in the nonfiction Hugo category. Maitz was also presented with the World Fantasy Convention's Howard Award for Best Artist and has been voted nine Chesley Awards by his peers in the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists. In 1980, he won the Society of Illustrators' Silver Medal Award of Excellence. Maitz is the creator of the pirate logo for Seagram’s Captain Morgan’s rum. The second book on his artwork, Dreamquests, was published in 1993.

Maitz has long been committed to the promotion of fantasy and science fiction as fine art genres, and he has been the driving force in organizing the first major museum exhibitions of fantasy and science fiction art. Maitz's artwork, which is exhibited nationally, resides in many prestigious private, corporate and permanent museum collections. Maitz's artwork is characterized by the realistic representation of the imagination.
