DAN D'AMICO

Artist Dan D'Amico's interest in art and animals can be traced to earliest childhood as he roamed the hardwood forests of his native northern Ohio and continued throughout his school years as he studied art.

D'Amico has a special affinity for the French Impressionists and the artwork of Andrew Wyeth. In the early 1980s, he began painting in acrylic and wood carving fulltime, exhibiting his work on a national level. Over the years, D'Amico has evolved a style that portrays the subject both accurately and naturally, while communicating his excitement in viewing wildlife. "I associate certain animals with certain moods," says D'Amico, "and I attempt to orchestrate all of the pictorial elements to evoke this mood."

A member of the Society of Animal Artists, D'Amico's art traveled with the national tour of both the Society's 1991 and 1992 Annual Art and the Animal Exhibitions. In the Society's 1992 exhibit at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown, New York, D'Amico received the Award of Excellence, the Society's highest honor. D'Amico's original art was also included in the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's prestigious Birds in Art 1992 exhibit.

At present, D'Amico resides with his wife, Susan, in a high mountain valley in the Colorado Rockies. With wilderness areas to the north and south and Rocky Mountain National Park to the west, wildlife is abundant. "Deer and elk are frequent visitors to our meadow," says D'Amico, "and coyotes have played with our dogs just a few feet from our deck. Golden eagles nest in the cliff on the mountain next to our cabin. Broadtail and rufous hummingbirds, evening grosbeaks and pine siskins are just a few of the many birds that come to our feeding stations. Cougars and black bears live in the area as well. Such a setting enables me to get into the field every day and helps to get more realism in my work."
